Why We Need Insurance?

According to “Insurance Principles Practices” by Frederick G. Crane, the answer is that by insuring their lives, people insure their future incomes. And future income, especially for young families, is tremendously valuable. The possibility of its being interrupted is a major risk.

Risk In Context To  Insurance

Risk according to “Fundamentals of Risk and Insurance” by Emmett J. Vaughan and Curtis M. Elliott is defined as the possibility of  an adverse deviation from a desired outcome that is expected or hoped for. Risk is also a state of the external environment. The possibility of loss must exist, even though the individual exposed to that possibility may not be aware of it. In other words, there is no requirement that the possibility of loss must be measurable, only that it must exist. In its broadest context, this definition includes any situation where there is a possibility of an unfavorable outcome. Insurance , as we shall see, is one method of dealing with risk as it reduces uncertainty and distributes losses.
